Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to address the CRT’s stance on deer management.

Scope

While we recognise that deer are an important species that contribute positively to the environment, deer management is crucial as they can have negative impacts on nature,  agriculture and tree planting as well as being involved in road traffic accidents.

In the UK, deer have no natural predator. As a result, they cause significant damage to the flora and structure of ancient woodlands and can threaten already vulnerable populations.

It is important for us to manage their growing populations but with care and respect. Well managed deer populations can have conservation benefits and be a source of healthy, sustainable food benefitting local communities.

On CRT land

We will make a decision on a case-by-case basis, monitoring numbers and assessing damage. We will seek to work with our neighbouring landowners and farmers.

We continue to monitor the impacts of deer on our woodlands and review management annually based on the results of these surveys.

Reasons why deer management may be necessary:
  • Crop damage

  • Tree damage

  • Deer-vehicle collisions

  • Deer health

  • Spread of tick-borne diseases to humans

Safety

We follow best practice as recommended by the British Deer Society.

Review

This policy is reviewed periodically and updated as necessary to reflect changes in regulations, best practices, or land management considerations.
