A big thank you to Elaine A big thank you to Elaine, our former Bere Marsh Farm manager, and her sponsors, who have successfully raised funds for a weather station at the farm. Elaine took on the challenge of walking the Marnhull parish boundary, a sponsored 19-mile trek to raise money for a Davis-Pro Weather Station. She joined a group of walkers invited by the Chairman of Marnhull Parish Council, each choosing their own cause to support. “There was a very heavy shower as we walked into the wind across a field of cows and a bull, otherwise the 8-hour walk was uneventful. Beating the Bounds of a parish boundary is an ancient custom,” Elaine explained. “It was a worthwhile challenge as well as being enjoyed with friends and neighbours. Sponsors’ generosity has ensured that there are sufficient funds for a Davis Pro weather station for Bere Marsh Farm. We all look forward to it being installed and operational.” Elaine (second from left) with Rosie, her dog, and fellow walkers. Photo by Catherine Turner Hannah Bosence, the current farm estate manager, said everyone was very grateful to Elaine for raising the funds for such a useful piece of kit. While farm manager at Bere Marsh, Elaine kept weather records from January 2021. However, these are only about 75 to 80 per cent accurate as they are only read when staff are at the farm. “We already measure rainfall and temperatures, but this will do so much more than that. Providing more complex data that feeds directly into useable programmes will provide us with better information on how to manage the farm. Particularly in relation to the ongoing studies of the behaviour of our resident barn owls,” said Hannah. Elaine’s walk is a brilliant example of how community effort can provide support for our farms.
